Your skills are in serious demand and you have plenty of options. You could easily go to work for Microsoft, Google, Amazon, or any number of great big companies, all of which are doing interesting things. But, consider this for a minute: if you were to go to work there and write 50,000 lines of incredibly ground-breaking code, do you think it would make a hill of beans difference to those companies? Yes, you might get a promotion and a nice raise. You might even get to meet Nadela, Page, Bezos, or Ellison. But, do you really think that code could move the needle? After a pat on the back and a nice bonus check, do you think the big boss will remember your name when you see him in the elevator next week? Will you even be allowed to ride in the same elevator next week? Will your incredibly awesome, industry-redefining code change the course of a company with thousands of employees?
In a small company, everything you do moves the needle. Every day you are making important and lasting contributions to the growth of your company. Everything is magnified.
